How to find a Pricelessware program. The history of Pricelessware.
What is Pricelessware?
The Pricelessware List reflects the categories and programs favored by alt.comp.freeware newsgroup participants. It is not a comprehensive list; categories are included if a program is selected in that category. Some categories list several selections; others have only 1 or 2. Most programs are well known but there are also some hard-to-find goodies on the list.
The Pricelessware slogan is "the best of the best in Freeware". Freeware is: Legally obtainable software that you may use at no cost, monetary or otherwise, for as long as you wish. All the programs listed are free but some are not Freeware. Freeware is noted as such. Other "ware" types are also noted. See alt.comp.freeware's Ware Glossary for definitions of the "wares" shown in program descriptions. There are NO Adware/Spyware programs on the Pricelessware List.
Licensing restrictions are noted in the descriptions: "free for personal use" etc. Other licensing information may be shown. For example: "open source: GNU GPL" (the source code is available for use and/or modification under the terms of the GNU General Public License).
How are Pricelessware programs chosen?
A new list of Pricelessware programs is selected once a year by alt.comp.freeware newsgroup participants. This web page has more information about the Pricelessware selection process: Pricelessware Review Procedures
How to find a Pricelessware program.
There are navigation links at the top of each Pricelessware page. If you know the name of the program go to the Program Index page and click on a link to go directly to the program's description. If you are looking for a particular type of program go to the Category Index page and click on a link to go directly to the subcategory.
Use the Google search box at the top of each Pricelessware page to search the Pricelessware site for specific words or phrases. You can search the entire site or limit your search to the Pricelessware or ACF directories.
The history of Pricelessware.
The Pricelessware list began as a successor to "The Big List", a quick reference point for frequently requested Freeware programs. The first Pricelessware List was created in the early months of the year 2000.
Pricelessware is the brainchild of Son of Spy (SOS) and the Pricelessware List was first hosted on his web sites:http://geocities.com/SiliconValley/Circuit/9810/Index.htmlThe "Pricelessware" name was coined by Tiger®. Graphics for the first Pricelessware List were created by Garrett. The first Pricelessware List was displayed on one web page that contained only program names and download links. Shortly after the Pricelessware List began Genna Reeney developed individual pages with detailed program descriptions and Home Page links and also began hosting the Pricelessware list.

In early 2004 a Pricelessware CD was created and the ACF Program Information pages were added. An ACF wiki was created by Mark Carter in May. The pricelesswarehome.org domain name was acquired by newsgroup participants and the web site came on-line in July.http://www.pricelesswarehome.org2005 saw the creation of a Pricelessware 2005 CD.
