Description: SpyBot-S&D searches your hard drive for so-called spy- or adbots; that is, little modules that are responsible for the ads many programs display. Many of these modules also transmit information, including your surfing behavior on the Internet. If SpyBot-S&D finds such modules, it can remove them. Another feature of Spybot S&D is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files, started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three major browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator and Opera. Spybot-S&D also contains some routines to find and correct invalid entries (regarding links left over from software uninstalled long ago, for example) into the registry (the global Windows database for settings).

Description: TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encrypted or decrypted right before it is loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read without using the correct password or encryption key. Until decrypted, a TrueCrypt volume appears to be nothing more than a series of random numbers. The entire file system is encrypted (i.e., file names, folder names, contents of every file, and free space). TrueCrypt never writes decrypted data to any storage device (it only temporarily writes data being decrypted to RAM).

Description: AxCrypt is free and easy to use open source strong file encryption for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP, integrated with Windows Explorer. Encrypt, compress, decrypt, wipe, view and edit with a few mouse clicks. Cryptographic primitives are AES-128 and SHA-1. Encrypted files have a ".axx" extension added to their names, and are shown with a new icon. To encrypt a file, right-click it in Windows Explorer and select 'AxCrypt | Encrypt'. To edit or view an encrypted file - just double-click it. To decrypt, right-click and select 'AxCrypt | Decrypt' instead. No configuration is necessary. Run the installer, and AxCrypt is ready to use. English, German, French, Spanish, Italian or Swedish will be used for messages and dialogues depending on the language of the system. Documentation (this document) and installation scripts are in English. COMMENTS: This is the most reliable and effective encryption program I've tried, and it is easy to use. But when done working with your encrypted files, you need to remember to right click and select 'clear passphrase memory' to make your file inaccessible again.
